Latest figures show that Facebook is well over a billion active users. Fake accounts are in pretty high numbers as well. Facebook has been dealing with a lot of impersonators and fake celebrity pages that claim to be the real deal. Moderating through a vast amount of pages and trying to determine which page is authentic and which isn’t is definitely a challenging task. That’s probably one of the main reasons why Facebook has decided to go for the Twitter-like verified badges, therefore helping everyone to determine which page/account is real and which one’s a fake.
